When JCPS has a bus crash, low performing school, bad first day, or other issue, the four news stations typically are quick to cover it. Understandable, and important.
But since each station does hours of coverage, why not highlight some of the successes at JCPS as well? At most sessions, the School Board honors students, parents, and faculty from across the district for various achievements. Why not take five minutes out of one of those many hours of broadcasts and showcase those individuals? Why not go to the schools that are improving and show what they're doing well? Why not dig deep into the data of JCPS and talk about the real issues that face the district? Why not do some digging into the charter schools issue and ask supporters what their plan will do and HOW it will accomplish it, as well as why the continue to misrepresent data? Why not take time to cover the school choice process and lead forums to answer questions for your viewers?
JCPS is a huge district. You are quick to send helicopters all over to get a few minutes of football coverage, but pay so little attention to academic achievements or to spotlight information your viewers can use to make more informed school decisions.
You've got lots of time to fill. Why not spend more of it focused on education?
Perhaps my e-mail didn't reach the right people at the other stations or they are too busy to respond. But I issue the challenge again. Spend more time covering the teachers and students who are doing the RIGHT things within JCPS. Spend more time digging into the issues within JCPS. Spend more time helping parents navigate the system. Spend more time focusing on education in general.
